Governor Sarah Palin joined (from right to left) Labor Commissioner Click Bishop, John Neeser of Neeser Construction, Mat-Su Borough Manager John Duffy, Corrections Commissioner Joe Schmidt, Mat-Su Borough Mayor-Elect Talis Colberg, Mat-Su Borough Assembly Cindy Bettine, and Rep. Bill Stoltze at the Goose Creek Correctional Center groundbreaking near Point MacKenzie in mid-June.

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin broke ground for the Goose Creek Correctional Center on June 17, 2009. The Goose Creek Correctional Center will be a medium-security facility focusing on rehabilitating inmates. It will offer classes, job training, Alcoholics Anonymous, and other services to help inmates re-integrate back into society. As the term implies, a medium-security prison houses inmates who committed crimes more serious than appropriate for housing at a lower security prison, but not serious enough to warrant maximum security.
