The Anchorage Daily News reported that Scott Davis sustained an injury and the team is returning to Puntilla Lake, their last checkpoint.
Scott Davis and Todd Palin are two of the best, most decorated snowmachine riders. As experienced veterans of the Iron Dog, with over 20 cumulative races between them, they know not to chance the rugged Alaska elements with an injury. The average rider could not even make it to Puntilla Lake.
The unusually warm conditions this year are not particularly favorable to snowmachine activity and aggravate the high risks associated with it. Just as a good pilot knows when to do a 180, because a flight has gone bad, this team exercised sound judgment in making their 180. They are to be commended for putting safety ahead of pride.
