The Alaska Division of Elections said a referendum to restore ACES will appear on the August 19, 2014 ballot, Alexandra Gutierrez, Alaska Public Media reported yesterday. The Division verified over 45,664 signatures raised by the group Vote Yes! Repeal the Giveaway. That group along with AK Backbone had gathered over 50,000 signatures from across the state.

The state’s Lieutenant Governor is the final authority on whether referenda are placed on ballots, but Lt. Gov. Mead Treadwell delegated the task to Division of Elections Director Gail Fenumiai because he is running for the U.S. Senate. “They needed 30,169 signatures to qualify. The group also met a requirement that those signatures come from across the state. They needed for at least seven percent of voters in 30 districts to sign their petition, and that threshold was met in all 40,” Gutierrez wrote.

ACES is one of former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s core accomplishments. It was repealed after her successor, Gov. Parnell waged a three-year-long war against the tax system he once supported and pledged to uphold.
